Tillering String Length

So, how long should the tillering string be when you are long string tillering?

I've seen pictures of it being 1.5x the length of the bow (guesstimate) and have heard people suggest that it should be just barely long enough to be able to fit on the bow (i.e. the length of the bow)

Yeah and P.S. I was planning on making a tillering string with leather cups.  How deep should those be so the tips don't fly out when it's bent?

If you are making a tiller string for a wood bow it is best to make it where it will fit from tip to tip with little if any extra.
  I don't use leather cups on a tiller string. I tie a slip knot at both ends of a piece of parachute cord. I also have a few heavy B-50 strings with a loop in one end and bowyers knot on the other end. I can adjust this one to any length just by re-tying the knot in a different location.

I have a heavy b-50 dacron string that I made too, it was getting kinda ratty and I was looking for a replacement short of making a string.  It was the first string I made, and consiquently the string I used to make my first bow.

There are builalongs on my site. My long strings are 1.5 times the length of the bow or so but I use the long string in a certain way. Info on my site. Jawge

I just hang up a bunch of old strings from 56' to 66' and grab the one I need.
