Colorado TD recurve part duex
« on: April 01, 2009, 08:09:00 PM »
Okay.. finally finished my second bow.  My first bow for those who saw the build along was an all wood take down recurve.  This time I did glass.

I used purple heart and lacewood.. then white glass for the face and clear glass for the belly.

Just a block of wood..

Then working on the lams..

It came out to be 56".. with 40#.  A little much for me, so I sanded the limbs narrower and got it at 35#, for target shooting, is perfect for me.

I used smooth on glue and it worked great.. my first time.  I used Tung Oil for the finish.. which I love.

Made a few small errors which I was able to fix.. but ready for my third to come out perfect.

I took this bow to the range Monday night and it shot great.  I even won the dollar challenge with it!!  And, I am new to traditional archery..

Have fun everyone.. building bows is great!

Cool bow! But tell me the story about this laminate. How do you do it? I`m thinking about purplehart innlay. Do you use a router? Good looking bow and nice details. And i can see you have solved the limb blueprint problem. Are you hunting with it? I will finish my TD soon. Getting inspired.
Never believe that you are worthless .... you can always be used as a bad example!

I got white glass and clear glass from Binghams.  I used a tapper lam and a parallel lam with a wedge.  I rough sanded all pieces with 50 grit paper.. cleaned twice with acetone.  Then spread the Smooth-On on each face that was getting glued.  So I layed the white Fiberglass in my new press.. spread the glue.. spread glue on the parallel piece, put on top of the white glass.. then spread glue on the other side of the parallel.. etc.
Wrapped it up and thru it in a heat box for 7 hours at 175 degree f.
Worked great.. clear glass is clear and all is working well.
Have not hunted yet, but shoot it daily at the hay bails.
