Boards don't have to be backed because they are boards. They have to be backed because the grain is not straight or because you are a beginner, bubby. I would back with silk, linen or burlap. There's info on my site. Jawge

Thanks George, alot of guys think if its a board that you back it, and of the 10 or so I've built most were oak. It's my first hickory bow and just want to get it right. bubby

Bubby, there is no reason to back hickory if you have a good board like mentioned. Here are some pics of a pair that I made from an unbacked hickory board. One is 45# and the other is 57#. Hickory and ash have been my favorite boards to work with so far.

thanks for all the input,I'll rip my board down into blanks and see what happens. quess the worse thing that can happen is they go in the kindlin box. Bows look nice akmud, really like the risers. bubby

four quarter by 5 3/4 by 72. also have one same dimensions but 50" long

If you have good grain along the sides, Cut a few backing strips first before you cut staves. You may not use them now but they will come in handy with other board bow projects. I usually cut backing strips 3/16" thick and they end up about 1/8" or slightly less after dressing up the surfaces.
