backing help??
« on: April 28, 2009, 04:01:00 PM »
I recently purchased a bow that has a cloth of somesort on the front of limbs. I assume its there to add poundage. its appears to glued on, My question is can I somehow stip it off, I want to refinish bow with a stain. I am not worried about losing a couple of pounds. The fabric just looks ugly. thanks gang

Fabric backing are not to add weight, but to prpotect the bow from breaking.  If you remove it you risk the chance of breaking the bow.

The cloth is there to help reinforce the back of the bow and to help prevent possible splitting of the limbs. I would not attempt to remove it as you may damage the bow beyond repair.
Maybe some one else here can advise you better, but I would just lightly sand the entire bow and apply the finish

I would say it depends on the wood used.  Some of these glues used is hard to get off.

Is it a selfbow or a glassbow?
