New Hybrid longbow
« on: July 01, 2009, 10:13:00 PM »
I have been building bows for a while now and figured that I could share how I have been doing things and get some new and fresh ideas.   There is always a better way to do something so please let me know if you see a better way.

I am building the bow for a friend of mine.  The riser is purple heart, zebra wood and phenolics.  Here are a couple shots of the progress.

after getting the fit "Light tight"  it was time for glue and clamps

out of the oven and cleanup on the jointer/planer

To shape the back of the riser for a "Light Tight" fit on the bow form I first use a band saw for the initial cut and then the drill press with a sanding drum and then flexible sanding blocks

then the same process is used to shape the belly of the riser to my template.  here is the fade.

and the riser block on the form.

Zebra and Purple heart one of my favorite combos.  Can't wait to see the lines on this one as compared to your recurves.

Recurve by Pete. initial bare shafting. Zebra wood riser.

Kenny,

I honestly can't answer that question from the technical side other than posting a force draw curve. The bow does gain a lot of its energy in the front of the curve and then stays stable till it reaches the 29 inch mark. This curve was done on a 64 NTN length bow. The final length measured was at 32 inches of draw.

The characteristics that I am most happy with is the complete lack of hand shock.  The bow has a nice cast, and is as quiet as anything. The one that I am building will be 64 NTN also.
