Osage Paradise
« on: July 12, 2009, 07:26:00 PM »
I think that the bow gods really want me to make another bow from osage.  After spending my first six months searching for good bow wood and working so hard to find it, cut it, and haul heavy logs back to the truck I have it the jackpot.  I found a man who sells fenceposts.  You might not believe me, but I have seen a feild full of ten foot pieces of some of the straigtest pieces of wood I have seen.  Good growth rings and no twist.  I was worried about the checks because the ends weren't sealed, but after I cut off what I didn't need the log was in great shape.  I don't think that I will ever need to go out and hunt for osage again!

I'd show you if I could.  Stacks and stacks of the stuff and he says he will start keeping the good stuff aside for me.

That's how I got locust for my first 10 years of bow making...farm store fence posts and rails. $5 to $8 a piece. Why work so hard to cut and split it. I did learn if they let you pick through the stack leave it better than when you found it!
  Congrats on your treasure.

I have access to all the Osage you could ever want. My dad sells posts also. I have been interested in making some kind of a long bow for a while now but could use a lot of help on  how to select a stave. I really need to start at square one, take me by the hand and walk me through it.
