Block of Kingwood needed.
« on: August 25, 2009, 07:05:00 AM »
I hope this post isn't out of line here.
Some of you may know me as a knife maker who hangs out mostly in the knife section, but I ended up here in the first place because I'm a traditional bow hunter.
I have an up-coming knife order from a fellow who wants a Kingwood handle to match his riser material and I am having difficulty locating a piece, short of buying a larger quantity.
I need a block about 1 1/8" thick, 1 7/8 wide and 5 inches long.
Anyone in the neighborhood got one?
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

I just did a little search and found a site that said some of the common names are:
Goncalo alves, Kingwood, Zebrawood, Zorrowood, Tigerwood, Mura, Urunday-para, Bois de zebre, Bossona.
Guess I learned something today!

Got it.
Had 'em on my list but have never ordered from them.
I will today.
Thanks.

I thought so, but it just doesn't match up to my specs.
I truly do need Kingwood.
I found some that will still take some time to dry, but I've got a customer waiting.
I need to keep kicking the bushes.
The piece I need will be about 1 1/8" thick, 1 7/8 wide and 5 inches long.
Thanks for continuing to help guys.

Try Woodcraft or the Wood-n-shop which is in St. Louis, Mo.  He has a website and ships everywhere.

This place  has some Brazilian Kingwood.  There is a sample pic of it when you scroll down.  Good luck finding what you need.

It is not difficult to find Kingwood for sale from wood suppliers.
What IS difficult is finding some that is DRY.
For the most part, Kingwood is used for turnery, and as such, is kept waxed and semi-dry so it doesn't fracture when turning.
That just won't do for a dimensionally stable knife handle.
