first succesfull hybrid! 58", 55#@28"
« on: August 31, 2009, 04:36:00 PM »
let's start with a brief history. The hybrid model was actually a stepping stone to the more difficult design, the laminated recurve. The first bow was glued up with a 3mm maple core, a little to thick boo, and 2 x 1/4" of ipé. It ended up with one leftover ipé lam, wich got paperthin. The bow crysalled.

The second bow was made of again 2 ipé lams, but without the maple core. Bad gluelines between the lams, at the fades caused a popping handle, after the top lam had already been completely shaved away during tillering. 2 attempts to reglue a handle on it failed.

Now I started with a 1/2" core, wich I planed to 1/4" at the tips. Clamped it into a similar shape. It was a Succes!!

I'm working on 2 buildalongs now, one of the bows will be posted tomorrow, the other one on wednesday. That will be the last one in the row  ;)  Guess you're pretty annoyed of my speed-posting!

stats;

boo-ipé (maple-padouk)
padouk overlays
58" ntn, 1 5/8" wide at fades, 7/16" wide at the base of the overlays
draws 55#@28"
holding up 1 3/4" of reflex (2 1/2" glued in)

Good job Nick.  Ya figured it out just fine with a bit of trial and error....

:)   I don't think we are annoyed at speed posting as much as we are in awe of the rate at which you can pop the things out...
Keep it up, and we may have to challenge you to do 2 a day!!!!     :bigsmyl:

Nice work. I have to say though, your knocks need the string groove cut into the side for safety reasons. If the overlay pops off there is not much to hold your string. If you cut the groves in the sides the stress will be more on the boo and core than on the overlay. Just a suggestion, don't wanna see anyone get hurt. Great looking bow.

Nick,
It's obvious you have an eye for tiller! When you're working with the bamboo though, try to taper it from 1/8" (3mm) thick at the handle, to 1/16" (1.5mm) at the tips and you won't have so much belly material to remove. Measure the thickness of the cross section, not the sides. Keep going man!

wow guys you're too kind!

some of you are really regular posters in my topics!! it's very apreciated!

thanks Jesse! And marty! and thank you danom:) !
and thanks Robert, hermann and Steve!

frode, after school I start working on bows till midnight. After midnight I start posting. After posting I sleep. after cycling to school I continue to sleep... that's the cyclus of the day! hehe.

Chupa, 2 a day? I already did... Twice  :)
but usually with a bit of pre-work or afterwork. The first time I tillered and sanded 2 hazel bows in a day. But one of them is stillbare, while the other got a stainjob and finish the next couple of days.

the second time it were bbi's... don't really remember wich ones, but I do remember I finished 2 that very day. they had ofcourse been glued up much earlier, lams had been pretillered...

maybe I'll glue up a bunch of bbi's before the next holidays (in 2months I guess?) and try to finish like 6 in 3 days... or so  ;)  Wish me luck!

Bjansen, this was no. 38, no.39 is now finished and no. 40 is almost done... no.40 will be the last one in this session. After that I'll start working a little on school, get back to fitness, and make a bow a week, or so. Instead of one for every day  ;)

Hey Okie!
I usually cut grooves in the sides for tillering. The bows are under much more stress, because of the higher actual drawweight and the lower brace. But none of my lam bows have fully cut sidegrooves. Haven't had troubles yet, but I'll think about what you said!

Tom, thank you! I'm a bit too lazy for so much sanding, hehe  :p  My beltsander is only small!

thanks don  ;)
