looking at the totally deformed belly, no, it was one cruel compression break.

Dano, it was exactly between the nodes. The ipé had some troubles there, like a knot running over the whole width... but it wasn't really a knot, more like the grain made a dip... the fractures support this theory. Should have picket a better slat...

Yep, When a guy makes as many bows as you, one is bound to break once in a while. Still hurts tho, huh?

I see a defined grain dip in the ipe. Man thats to bad - is a pretty bow. Not sure how you choose your ipe but i HIGHLY recommend taking a 5X glass with you and looking at the ipe before you buy it. Ipe is a great wood, but you can not see imperfections well with the naked eye my friend.

Man, that really sucks.  I've got a bulletwood bow with a grain swirl like that. I was lucky enough to find it before it blew up.

I have an IPE/Boo I just finished that has one of these grain variations.  Kinda like a leftover knot.  I always worried about it.  Guess it makes sense to worry about it.

Hate to see that. Bow was lookin great.
I had one just the other day blow on me, luckily I was doing a dry fit on it before gluing it up. When I pulled in the reflex... BOOM. It had the same dip in the grain. I couldn't tell it till it broke.

Feel your pain. I backed a hickory that came in light and tried to put a little to much reflex deflex in it. I took it out of the form and it had broken both limbs right at the clamps that compressed the limbs. It is setting in my building as a reminder to think before acting. Don

Might as well save the handle and other limb. If it happens again with another bow make a take down bow with the orphans.

Beautiful bows, keep up the great work. I've made lots of long bows, r/d bows, but tried 3 wood recurves and they all broke so far -it's really pushing the limit of wood. Kirk

Hell, that hurts...

Nick I am sorry for your loss.
It looks to me your Bamboo is almost as thick as your belly wood, I hate to give advise here but I have build a few Boo backed bows and found I have to really taper the Boo so it does not overpower(crush) the belly, just my $0.02.
You do some very fine work.
Keep on making chips!!!
Regards, Bert.
