Scuffing finish with scotchbrite ....
« on: September 30, 2009, 12:53:00 PM »
I have a HH longbow that has a shiny finish that's not in the best shape.  I'm thinking of taking a scotchbrite pad to it to scuff it up a bit (to dull the finish and even it out).  Will it damage the bow at all?

I would try a coat of satin or matte finish on top of it (Helmans spar will work..in a spray can).  Scuffing the surface with steel wool (or maybe scotchbright) will indeed work at first...but I as you carry it around and rub it,etc...that gloss finish will come back.  A top coat of a satin or matte finish would be a better choice in my opinion.  Good luck.

I've used scotch brites to gently rub my bow before finishing. They work very well. My bow shoots just as great as it always has.

I use satin poly to dull the shine of the Tru-Oil finish I use on my selfbows. Works great and it only takes a quick spray to get results.

Pat I heard you say that you did that once and have been doing it every since.

Also Mr. Magoo..I jumped the gun a bit...had my answer for you before  fully understood your question. A light sand with wool/scotchbriht or light paper will not hurt the bow...obviously if you sand too much it will effect the tiller and weight...but I don't think a light finish buff will have any noticable difference
