Bamboo reducing tutorial?

Is there any good info on taking raw bamboo into the limb making stage with pictures? I used the search function on here but had no luck. I watched a Youtube video but it did not look like a great job. Thanks Flint

hmm...Dean does it on a jointer.  Jd Jones does it on a bandsaw and finish's on the belt sander.   Shame there isnt all the photo's of his static build along!  I've heard of guys doing it with planes/toothing planes (not sure which one).

sam harper has a boo ipee build along were he starts with raw boo planks. don't know the address but google search "sam harper build along" or "bow building for poor people and apartment dwellers". Either on of those should get you there.

I use (and love) a planer.  Even though I about took off my finger prints permenantly this year.

I've used a toothing plane and a jointer. It's a LOT of work with the toothing plane but it does the job nicely. You run the risk of fraying the tips with the toothing plane. Lately I've been removing mass with the jointer and final thinning on a belt sander. Finish with a few light passes of the toothing plane to prep the glue surface.

I start with the drawknife, then the spokeshave, and finish with betlsander.

I use a jointer to flatten and get the thickness more or less uniform, but use push blocks and avoid the pucker factor with the jointer. Then a sharp block plane to near finished thickness (you can bent the bamboo to hit high spots selectively and be very accurate with the block plane). Then finish with the toothing plane, which grooves the surface for glue-up with Urac. Never had one delaminate.

It was with one of those hand held power planers.  I just got done with a pass on a piece of IPE and blades were still spinning when I grabbed it from the bottom.  Thank God it wasn' at full speed.                  :mad:    :eek:
