Checkering a box call takes practice . If you are referring to the Neil Cost style of checkering. You will need a template (your pattern) razor sharp chisels. Keep in mind all wood is different and will work differently.
There are some today that use a router to checker there box calls. This all depends what YOU want to put into your calls. Finishes some use deft, again experiment and find out what works for you. Watch flea b*y for a video put out by the GA NWTF chapter Mak'n box calls with Neil Cost. You will also see books on there.
