how do you checker wood?

I just started making box calls and wanted to checker the sides and put my initials in it. Any one know how? To all you call makers do you put a finish on your calls? also has anyone ever checkered the grip of a self bow how did it work out? -Scott

Iv never checkered a bow but have checkered some wood gun stocks.  First you need some checkering tools.  Brownells or Midway USA are both gunsmithing supply stores and carry checkering tools. Get the tool handle and then get the bit for whatever line per inch pattern you want and practice on some scrap lumber.  Make yourself a template out of plastic for your pattern style and take off.  The cutters I am referring to only cut one direction and work best for me when I cut pulling toward me that way I can see where Im cutting before the cut is made.  If you get real good and want to invest more money there is an attachment that goes on a Fordham rotary tool that will work for checkering.

Checkering a box call takes practice . If you are referring to the Neil Cost style of checkering. You will need a template (your pattern) razor sharp chisels. Keep in mind all wood is different and will work differently.

There are some today that use a router to checker there box calls. This all depends what YOU want to put into your calls. Finishes some use deft, again experiment and find out what works for you. Watch flea b*y for a video put out by the GA NWTF chapter Mak'n box calls with Neil Cost. You will also see books on there.
