Extreme FOC ????

What are you guys considering extreme FOC? And what are some tips for getting there. I have been playing with different sizes of aluminum arrows and have no problem getting total arrow weight in the 550 to 600 gr. range but my FOC is in the 13% to 17% range is this OK or is more better. Is carbon easier to get higher FOC because of the brass inserts and how high in spine above your normal spine do you have to go and still tune with extremely heavy points.

I personally define extreme FOC as anything over 20%. In my experience I have found it very hard to achieve extreme FOC with aluminum shafts. Aluminum in my experience tend to take a bend when trying to bareshaft an aluminum that has extreme FOC. From what I gather listening to those here that have much more experience with carbons, it seems that that is the best way to go if one really wanted to take advantage of what extreme FOC can offer. For me I get plenty of penetration with my aluminums at 13% FOC and good shot placement.

Might take a look at Dr. Ed's report at the head of the PowWow listings.  He defines up to 12% as normal, 12 to 19% as high, and over 19% as extreme.

The big benefit is that you can shoot a lighter arrow with high FOC and get as good of penetration as an arrow that is quite a bit heavier. Manufacturers now know that and have started building arrow with weight forward technology. Shawn

Right now I am shooting a 31 inch 2315 and it is shooting really good with a 150 grain broadhead but the FOC is only 13.4% so I am in about the same place you are.

After posting this I found and read some of Dr. Ashbys reports on FOC and found some interesting reading but I find it hard to do with aluminum. I may have to try with carbon but I dont know if I will ever make it to the extreme side of FOC but I would like to get a little heavier up front than I am now.

I use 200-225 grains on arrows that are finished at 600 grains or so. My wife's arrows are 500 grains finished with 200 grains up front. Like some of you, I have had mixed results with aluminum. Carbon seems to be the ticket for this consideration.

The grain weights of 200 250 and 285 up front is that insert and point or just the point and what do you do to get that weight. Also I seem to need a pretty stiff arrow to shoot in my bow I am shooting a 56#@28 quillian patriot drawing to 29.5 with a FF string. Any recommendations would be welcome.

I was shooting mid 50's with 175 gr tips, std inserts and 50 grains added behind the insert by either the screw on PDP weights or a home made 50 gr weight glued in for a total of about 240-250 grs. This was with 2114 or 2115's.

Mine is point weight. My 250 is a one piece screw in and my 285 is a 160 glue on field point with a 125 steel adapter.

You can increase the FOC in your arrows by building up the strike plate, this in turn will make your bow need weeker spine shafts.

there's lots of ways to get a lot of weight up front with alluminum, PDP sistem, steel adapters, and 190gr points.

I shoot 2117's with about 400gr up front, and getting good flight out of non cut bows.

OK I give up I tried some 50 gr. inserts and went up to a 175 gr. point on my CX 150's then my arrows were too weak. So I went to 250's and they were too weak so i went to 350's and got them to spine but with a 50 gr. insert and a 175 gr. point I still only get about 15% FOC so I guess I will just have to settle for that for now.

How much FOC would I add going to 100 gr. inserts instead of the 50 gr. I already have 225 up front would 275 be too much. I can cut my arrows down to make the spine right but will that affect the FOC.

I've always preferred high FOC arras as I find them easier to tune to a bow and they seem to exhibit greater penetration.  I use two different carbon shafts, AD Trads and Beman Venture 500's and I'm getting between 21% and 25.5% FOC with arra weights between 530-620 grains.  I use 100 grain brass point inserts and 75-100 grain steel point adapters and 125-175 grain points/broadheads.

GTs 55-75s about 29 1/2" with 250 up front.  Around 24% and fly great.  53# Predator.

La.bowhunter, if your arrows are to week, once you got an FOC that you like, .....just build up the strike plate until the spine right.

Well I went out this morning and went with the carbon arrows. I shot them bare shaft out to 20 yards they hit where I look and are flying  perfect if I do my part with good form and release sticking in the target all you see is the nock. For now I am going to just shoot them like they are with the flight I am getting and 15.3% FOC I think they will do just fine. Tomorrow I am going hog hunting so maybe I will find out first hand.
