just pulled one out of the oven (pics added) more pics
« on: February 15, 2010, 11:20:00 PM »
just pulled the tape off my second attempt at a youth bow. it is 50" total length, and is a r/d style long bow. the riser is bocote and cocobolo, and the limbs are action boo with bocote veneers from kennym. all i'm gonna say is wow! and that you guys are out of luck for pics, cause the camera decided it didn't want to work. but tomorrow i should be able to get some up.

Looking forward to the pictures.  I'm working on a form for a youth bow myself.  I'd love to hear the specs on your bow (lams and risers) just to get an idea of where I should start.

forgot to give the specs. it is 50" tip to tip, it has a 14" riser, and a lam stack thickness of .246. i tapered the limbs from the fades to 1/2" at the tips. if all goes right this should give me a 30 to 35lbs draw weight at about 20"

the previous bow was all the same except the lam thickness was .235. the draw weight on it was 41# at 28" cant remember what it was a 20"

well i got busy today. since real work is slow, i did some fun work. i got the handle shaped,  the tip and the riser  overlays on and the sight window mostly done. here are a couple more pics

this is the braced profile

here it is drawn about 22".  its pretty heavy i think it maybe closer to 45# at that draw length. that shouldn't be a problem , i have plenty of width in the limb that i can remove to drop weight if necessary.

the  tips i have a bit more shaping to do on theses guys but i think they will be just fine once they are done

here is a pic of the riser looking head on

and the opposite

thanks for looking
eric

Beautiful stuff here!!!!! That bocote looks great.
I especially like the design of that riser - the radius cut out of both the belly and the back.Really looks sharp.
Take care,
Ed

Looks good.  Those walnut limbs look awesome!

Thanks for the specs.  I'll add that info to my brain and try to hash out what I need.  Your R/D shape looks pretty close to mine so far, so these numbers should come real close.  What glass thickness did you use?

thanks guys. yeah kennym really hooked me up with that bocote.

just got done playin with it a little. used my high tech draw weight scale witch consists of a bathroom scale a 3/4" oak dowel and a 2x4x6 piece of wood, to get the draw wieght. at 20"it pulled 35# and at 28" it pulled 65#. i'll say this, it feels like 65# too. i guess thats the disadvantage to a really short bow.  on the other hand, this little sucker is very fast and very quiet. the hand shock is next to nothing also. overall i'm quite pleased. the draw weight at 20" is real close to what i wanted. unfortunately it is too strong for my little cousin, so i'll be lightening it up some. maybe to 30# at 20". thanks for looking. hopefully i'll get her finished up this weekend. i got a couple other bows i've been workin on that i got post too.

instead of just bringing it up i'll give you all an update. i have narrowed the limbs and trapped them a bit to get the weight down close to what i wanted. it is now 28# at 20", and my cousin can handle it much better. this made the draw weight at 28" to 53#, and while it does stack a bit it really shoots the arrows well.  i may have to make me one for hunting the thick stuff around here. this one too should be ready for a finish this weekend, and i'll post more pics then.
