phenolic Tip sanding
« on: February 28, 2010, 06:01:00 PM »
Guys, I am trying to repair some overlays on some recurve limbs.  I bought some brown phenolic and black.  After trimming and presanding the tapers, the brown looks white.

What is the procedure you go thru to smooth it out nice?

Sounds like it needs to be buffed out with maybe some 000 steel wool. Maybe someone with more experience will chime in.

when you spray finish on the phenolic it shoild darken.. I know black phenolic does, sand down a scrap piece and wipe some finish on it and see if it darkens

Just take some acetone on a rag and wipe the tips it will give you the general idea of how it will look with finish.
Red phenolic does the same thing but when finished the red comes out.

Thanks guys, I guess I am confused how folks get phenolic nice and bright and smooth.  I think the white is the linen.  I want to sand them some before gluing on.

Mark.

I usually sand the Phenolic starting with 100 grit then work my way up to 320 grit, I have found doing this makes it real smooth, as for the color that should come out when you put the finish on.

You can buff it to with a cloth wheel and some jewelers rouge on a grinder.
