bow refinishing
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:22:00 PM »
I'm a newbie on this great site. Don't know if this is the right place to ask this question but here goes. I have a old Ben Pearson Hunter 709, that a friend brought me from a landfill dump. The bow is in rough shape, cosmetically. I know that refinishing will reduce value, but it's not an issue with this one. I have had another just like this one since I was 12 yrs old, in much better condition. Just thought I clean it up a little to play with. The bow in question has been sanded to dull finish I quess, and has had two different colors of paint sprayed on it, green and gray. My question is what would be a good finish,( polyurthane, shellac, etc. I don't have a clue what to use?, any help would be a great help. Thanks

Welcome and you are in the right place.  I would use the polyurthane if it were me, have always had good luck with it.  True oil would be another option.  Look the bow over real well for any damage that would make it unsafe to shoot.

spray poly would work just fine. I've used it on several vintage bows.

you should also check out the the trad collecting forum on this site (lots of info there on refurbishing old bows):  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=14
