Heaps of limb set....bamboo backing too thick?
« on: March 12, 2010, 10:37:00 PM »
Hey mates,
As some of you good folk will know I've been having a few hassles with my first bamboo backed bow.
I've encountered another one.   :banghead:   My limbs have taken on a fair bit of limb set during the tillering process.Roughly 2-2 1/2 inches.
My first thought is that my boo is too thick and it's overpowering the belly timber.
Could I trap the boo some more to alleviate or slow this from occurring? Would it help the situation?
Plus it'll help hide my crappy glue lines!!lol   :D

You can trap the limbs and it will relieve the tension but the damage is done. I did the same thing on my first boo backed tri-lam. I realized early on that the boo backing was too thick and beginning to over power the belly(osage) and that's when I trapped it. That prevented any more set. I believe the bow was 1 3/8" wide and I trapped it so the boo back was about 1" wide across the rind.

Can't wait to get on to my second!!!

What belly wood did you use?

There's not a huge choice of belly timber over here in Oz.I used Spotted Gum,which is commonly used in selfbows.I put the limb set down to the boo being to thick.

Did you cut the profile of the bow out on the boo before thinning it?  That is a critical step.
Take a kid hunting!

Yeh,I cut the profile out first but I think in my hast to finish and shoot my bow I neglected to thin it enough.
Just in too much of a hurry to see the end result.
The next one'll be much better!!
