3 Rivers Archery
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:45:00 PM »
I dunno the right place to put this...

Kudos to 3 Rivers.  I ordered some sinew, hide glue, artificial 70# artificial sinew, and giant farrier's rasp, and they arrived in 8 or 10 days well-packaged, all in.  Good job 3 Rivers, you have my recommendation.

My god this rasp is crazy.  I've never even seen one up close this size.  I guess it would be a great tool for flattening gemsbok horn?

Funny how everything but the rasp is all the same colour.

Artificial sinew string:  How many strands of 70# sinew should i use to make a bowstring for a 50# bow, would you say?  I use a plaited loop at one end and a constrictor knot at the other.

This rasp is crazy.  Osage here i come.

i should add:  the rasp was taped down in the bottom of the box, so that it would not slide around and damage the back strap sinew or other items.

3rivers has always done me right! Sorry I never have used sinew for bow string. I use Dacron B-50.

Be sure and vote online for their customer appreciation contest! By the way, vote for me,,, I entered one in each category!!!!   :archer2:

i use dacron as well, but mine is in storage in another city...until i get it...

i've got a vine maple stave floor tillered and looking good, but the jute twine i was using sucked.  It kept breaking.  so when i ordered the rasp and the sinew, i threw in the artificial sinew string.  I want to wrap the tips of this bow in sinew before i tiller it, because there is a small check filled with superglue near one tip.

so, i would normally use 14 strands of b50 for a 50# bow.  What's the test on b50?  50#?  This is 70# sinew, so it should be pretty strong.

that rasp is awesome~  i can't believe i can get such a smooth surface from such huge teeth.  It's a big f-off rasp on one side, and a double-cut file on the other.  roughed the thing nearly down to floor tiller in an hour

Would it happen to be this rasp?

I'm asking, as I'm in need of a decent rasp myself.

Ok, for a bowstring generally 5x bow draw weight is considered a good safety margin.  Therefore each strand is good up to 14# of draw weight.  4strands is good for a 56# bow.  B-50 usually tests just under 25#(22-23).  I've had good experiences with the type 3rivers sells (artificial sinew) and bowstrings.  Now when you make the bowstring and string it up take leather and rub the string to heat it up.  It will melt the wax and make the string really round as well as stretch it out.  I've found the type from 3rivers not to stretch and creep as much as b-50.  The artificial sinew comes prewaxed and there's more than enough wax on it to wax the bowstring so the leather will take excess off.  I don't have experience flattening gemsbok horn but I'm researching it for my own gemsbok horn bow.  I already have the horns but haven't done anything with them yet.
