Form Finished, Finally
« on: April 25, 2010, 12:38:00 PM »
I finally got my form finished.  After getting my shop built, doing honey-do's, football and baseball games, band concert's, hunting season, and of course, winter, it's finally done.  I've worked really hard to get it right.  I hope it shows up in the end result, my first bow.

Nice work.

If I'm seeing it right, it looks like one piece of dimensional lumber?  If so, make sure you store it in a climate controlled area.  All the forms I've made that way have warped over time.

Just something to keep an eye on.

Yup keep an eye on it. One piece boards like that can warp over time. Plywood, laminated together is a better route for forms. But it looks good.

Thanks for the info.  I put a piece of angle iron down the full length on the bottom half to help insure that it stays straight.  Do you guys think I need to run a strip along the full length of the top half?  I was concerned with warpage caused by the heat box.  I didn't think about it warping while not in use.

I made one similar to that out of 2x stock and it didn't warp along the long axis, it warped along the short axis of the form and it did it in the heatbox. It ruined the bow I was making - a bamboo backed ipe bow. The warpage along the short axis caused a major twist in one limb. After that I junked the 2x form and made one out of plywood. No problems yet.

Sharp Looking form there.

Was wondering if you did anything special to lay the metal strip on the form?  Also if there was a reason, why you chose metal?  I know others use a strip of wood or laminate but, I also was thinking about a Aluminum strip on the form I am building.  Thanks for any insight.

With metal on both edges,it may stay...  Just look it over before each bow!

I admire the cleanliness of your shop, mine just won't stay that way long!
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I admire the size and equipment of your shop, Kenny.

I decided to use a 2"x 12" diminsional lumber for my form because it was pretty close to dead-on 1.5" wide.

I'd seen several others on here use the same type of materials, and use the aluminum strip to insure a flat surface.
