What did I find ?
« on: May 15, 2010, 11:17:00 PM »
My dad past away last Summer and I  asked my Mom the other day if I could have his old Bow.  I never saw my dad shot this bow I new it was a old Bear bow.
It was all painted over with green, brown and black paint even the medallion in the riser was all covered up.  On the top limb it said Bear Glass-powered  Kodiak  Hunter  on the other it had  A Bear archery with the patten # on the riser it has a s/n KT36055    AMO-60"    45#.

I took some very fine steel wool and some Denatured Alcohol and started rubbing on that old flat paint, I must say that has brought this bow to life. It has some awesome looking wood in the riser as I rubbed over the S/N it came off but there it was again under the finish in the bow .
Now the question is is there away I can tell how old this bow is with the S/N ?  Also should I spray some type of finish on this bow ?   I would like to use it to hunt with some day. I'm sure this bow has never killed anything but a target.
I will post before and after pictures later.
Thanks.

usually you can google the model and serial number and find some info, it may take some searching but its possible. as far as finish some sort of polyurethane would work, but maybe one of the guys here who refinish bows can point you in the right direction.

Try posting this in the Collector's forum. Lots of good guys over there.
There is a possibility that you have a factory camo finish on that bow. I'd stop removing it until you find out for sure what you have.

according to an internet source, it was made between 1967 qnd 1977. If the coin in the riser is inset flush with the wood it is before 1972. Hope this helps

Thanks for all the help. Yes I know now that it was a factory camo but it sure looks a lot better now that I have removed it. The Brass coin is flush with the riser and the K in the s/n means it is in the 70's with the brass coin and it is flush this must be 1970 to 1972 bow.
The limbs are in great shape and there is only one scratch on the limb. I'm having a string made for it  now and I will put some fletching on the old Bear arrow that where with them bow.
Any thoughs on what I should put on the bow to protect the finish ?

   Thanks
