Osage at Woodcraft
« on: May 16, 2010, 10:24:00 AM »
I was surprised to find some at Woodcraft. It was 8/4 and 4/4. I looked at the rings and it looked more like Cherry. I could barely see any diference in the early and late rings. Could this wood be made into a backed longbow or is it only good for wood working projects?

To get a good look at the rings you may have to use a scraper on the end of the board. This wood wasn't cut for bows! there may be some suitable but there are probably better sources for good osage.
Can you get a pic of the wood? End grain and longitudinal grain.

My camera broke, sorry. I doubt I'd risk the $ at 15.99 a BF. I still have few staves of proper Osage.

I agree with Pat.  The osage I have seen at Woodcraft isn't bad and could likely make a bow but it's pricy and you can find bow cut wood a lot cheaper.
Take a kid hunting!
