tools need
« on: July 25, 2010, 12:03:00 AM »
OK, I'm finally gettin' serious about buildin' me a couple of selfbows.  Finally chased a ring succesfully on an Osage stave and have it in pretty good shape.  I gotta fella that isn't buildin' bows anymore and doesn't plan to.  How much would you say a draw knife, spoke shaver?, heat gun, bow horse, tillerin' tree and scale, and a hot box be worth.  Everything is old and used but seems to work.  Haven't seen the hot box yet so can't say about it.

The bow horse works, but wouldn't mind buildin' a new one, this ones pretty rough, and nothin' special.

What do you think this stuff would be worth.  Like I said, everything is old, and not in the best of shape but seems to work.  So what would you say would be a fair price so that nobody gets beat on the deal ?

Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
joekeith

in a situation like that i would probably look around the auction site for similar condition stuff and average the prices just to be fair. its always hard to tell what someone else values their tools at, especially if theyve got alot of time invested in them. theres always the obvious too of asking him what he wants for it and going from there.

My opinion

draw knife - up to $40.00
spoke shaver - $15.00 to $25.00
heat gun - $10.00 to $20.00
scale - $30.00 to $40.00

Bow horse, tillerin' tree & hot box? Depends on quality and features.

I'd say for all $100.00 to $150.00 and both parties should be happy.

Seems to me that if I was looking for tools to buy, I wouldn't settle for "not in the best of shape" for a whole lotta money.  What's he asking for it?

Keith my self if you can afford it id either buy a new draw knife and spoke shave or a couple of relly nice used ones.Same with the scale there about 40-50 bucks new.For those three items I would not settle for just somthing thats in ok shape. You can buy a heat gun at HF for 10.00 bucks or at Wm for 20.00.You can build everthing else youve listid pretty quick and cheap espically if you can fined some scrap wood.Old hollow core doors work great for a heat box. Then alleast you know what you got and can build it to suit you.If you decide to buy the stuff it all depends on the condition. From what you described the person should just be glad to get most of it out of his way.Just my opinion.

I was thinking about 100-150 too.
