latest hickory went boom..
« on: August 09, 2010, 11:25:00 PM »
well it seems my latest bow wasnt meant to be, was shooting it a bit tonight while trying to get some of the handshock tuned down, and this happened. really didnt expect it to happen, and no signs of stress on the bow at all before it went.     well, looks like that snaky stave is gonna get started sooner than expected.lol.

haha yea, it was a great experience working on it though, which is really what i love about building bows. always something new to learn and never really know what to expect.

That's too bad, Richard.  Any ideas on what caused it?  Do you pretty much always have a bow underway?  Do you take bows like this one and put them with others of their kind to look at occasionally and think, what if?

im not really sure what caused it, but might just have been bad wood. some very dark spots in the heartwood that im not sure were normal. as far as whether i always have a bow underway, i try to, just for sake of keeping myself busy when i have some free time, but i sometimes only have the design figured out then when i can i get the wood and start from there. usually id cut off the handle, then finish it as if it suceeded, and hang it with my other ones, however im using whats useable off this one for various other projects i have(not bows of course).

Bummer.  I can't really tell what's goin on with the grain there.  Looks a little squirrelly.

At any rate, keep up the great attitude and keep posting pics.  I broke 7 bows in a row once.  And there have been stints where I couldn't do anything right even when I tried real hard.  Then there's times bows just fall into tiller.  I'm pretty sure I know which ones I learn more from  :)

Have fun.  Peace.

Too bad, Richard. I broke an oak board bow last night myself while shooting with my oldest son. (Don't tell anyone but he is shooting a wheelie bow...) It gave no warning either.
Better luck with the next one.
