First Trad Shoot
« on: February 13, 2008, 11:52:00 PM »
Well, about 8 years ago I got into shooting with my cheapy PSE Impala recurve.  I got pretty good with it but school and what not got busy and enthusiasm waned.  Well I recently have gotten back into shooting and have actually tried a decent bow.  I now have a new Martin Hunter -- not the highest end but pretty nice to me.  I have been putting atleast 60 arrows a day down it to get better.....

Anyways,

A buddy at work has invited me to a weekend trad shoot in a couple of months.  What are they like? What do you do?  How tough is the competition?  What should I expect?

Thanks for the help!

If you are shootin with other trad folks you can bet on a bunch of fun, if they set the shoot like we do, you had better take extra arrows!!!  :biglaugh:

Beepy...

I went to my first 3D shoot (first archery event, actually) in 2006 and web documented the whole thing.  If you want to see a 3D shoot from the perspective of a brand new shooter, try this:

 http://www.howardhilllongbowmen.com/adventures/sunbasinshoot/sunbasinshoot.html

It's a ball...  I understand back East they're a bit more intense, with more emphasis on scoring.  Most of the folks I've shot with out here in the Northewest, at some 20 events now,  don't bother... just gather a bunch at the starting line and go shoot together.   Haven't had so much fun since the early days of muzzle loading, back in the 50's, before it got over-organized.

I did my first Trad shoot in Scotland, all trad bows and a lot different to wheelbows, folks were there to have fun.
Even the serious shooters lokked like they had more fun than at the normal shoots I did before.
Black Douglas 68#
Wing Gull 60#
Hoyt Havoc 80#
Coupla other wheelies.
If ya gonna be stupid, you better be tough!

You'll never meet a better group of people than you'll find at a trad shoot.  Traditional archery is great fun, but the shoots are the best.  Mrs. Stickman and I started a small business with the traditional archer in mind just so we could afford to schedule a different shoot every other weekend or so.  Go and have a blast, and look (ask) around for the next one.  A years wait will be waaaaaaaay to long.  :jumper:

After seeing the pics of the Moses Lake shoot I have one thought.  I better start making lots of arrows.
