RED WING
« on: August 19, 2010, 09:36:00 PM »
I was given a Red Wing Hunter bow to play with. It laid outside all winter and has some cracks in the handle plus it was faded real bad. I sanded it down, found zebra wood! The bow is only 36# at 26" - 48" long. I wonder if I can just fill the cracks with glue (titebond3) and sand over it to fill the cracks or maybe force glue in the crack and clamp it? Also, the bow has 2 ( 1 on each limb ) washer like things on the back of the bow - anyone know what were these for?

I believe the washer like things are threaded and were used to mount a bow quiver that Wing made and sold.  They also sold a plastic plate with the threads on it, you taped it to your bow and mounted the Wing quiver.  They were a very good quiver, used one on several of the Wings I owned.
Can you post a picture of the cracks it might make it easier to offer a suggestion.

I'll try to post a picture. I can take it and download it to "my pictures but don't know how to put it on here.

In general, tb3 isn't a gap-filler.  I'd use an epoxy or even CA instead.

Can't say for sure without seeing the pictures, but I agree with Joe.  TB won't fill gaps.  Get yourself some gel superglue (CA glue), lay it on thick, heat it up slightly with a heat gun to help it run down in the crack.  Clamp it slightly to remove any voids, add some more glue and heat, and then clamp it up.  Again, without pictures it's hard to conjecture.  If the crack is very big you'd have to go with an epoxy.

You left it out all winter? Bummer, they are nice little bows, lot of fun to shoot.

OH MY GORSH - NO, I would never let a bow out even overnite. It was given to me from a guy at work. His kids left it out over winter. I'm trying to clean it up for my 10 year old son.
