String silencers?
« on: September 24, 2010, 12:36:00 AM »
I like the mink, nutria or beaver string silencers and have bought a few off of the big auction site, but they get a little pricey if doing several bows. Anyone know of a source for these or a place to get complete hides to cut your own. I'm not cheap, just poor   :D   .Thanks, Don

Try thrift stores. I know a guy who haunted them for a little bit and ended up with a garbage bag full of furs he cut off jackets.
Or, see if you can find a trapper in your area that may be willing to sell you a fresh skin for cheap. You can get home tanning kits at Tandy Leather.

I've started using sheep fleece. It works great, sheds water and looks cool. You can buy whole skins and I think bags of scraps from Tandy's.

You might try fly tying supply houses or websites for beaver pelts, or other types of critters. You can find just about anything at a good shop.
It is better to be approximately right than exactly wrong.
