dying wood

I just read the post on "sunbursting" wood, and that made me come up with an idea or two.

Has anyone died the wood thru and thru.. meaning, can you let the wood soak long enough in dye to get into a thick piece.

Also, is the Rite dye the way to go?  let's all the grain still show thru?

Was thinking of making my own "Dymond" wood in colors that I want.. so need to know the best way to dye the laminates.

if you do them thin enough , you can just let them soak. if they are particularly hard , or thick , you will need pressure too. then you just glue em and shape em. you can find some homemade micarta videos that give the basic principles behind joining the layers , and glue is mostly personal preference.


used to do this a bit for 1911 scales.used very thin pieces , and put them in a pressure cooker. i always used rit , liquid though , and glued with 2ton epoxy...

Rit dye will fade over time especially with exposure to UV. Leather dyes are more colorfast.
