Newbie with a dumb question about strings

I have been told that a string for a recurve needs to be 4" shorter than what you measure tip to tip. Now for the dumb question. do you measure tip to tip in a straight line or do you measure along the contour of the limbs and grip?
I tried a few different searches as I am sure this question has already been answered here but I was not able to find anything. Thanks

Lay the bow in its belly, and take a flexible measuring tape, (the sewing kind works best) measure from nock to nock along the back of the bow following the curves, (not in a straight line).
Good Luck
