Hickory backing

What grain orentation is best for hickory backing?

Almost any will work in my experience but I prefer bias grain(/////).  Watch the sharp runoffs!

Timely posts! I have a 6' length of hickory to rip for backings on a red oak bow, with runoffs on the last 12" - need to decide whether to splice two straight-grained lengths (under a cherry grip/splice cover), or use a single full length piece with runoffs at one tip. I'd read hickory grain is not too critical- but sharp runoffs worried me.

Kent, either way will work for a hickory backing. I have spliced as many as I have made full length. When in doubt, go safe!!! d;^)
