Form Advice
« on: December 11, 2010, 10:53:00 AM »
Hello.  I have been lurking and reading for quite some time and have started getting ready to build a 68" Bingham's R/D longbow.  Heat box has been completed.  I ran into an issue when smoothing out my form with a pattern making bit.

I used mesonite for my template and didn't realize that when I screwed it to the form that the screws made big dimples on the bottom side of the template.  This raised the edge of the template up enough that I went too deep (past the depth of the template) on the last third of one side of the form.

My plan is to use wood putty or something on the form to build it up, redraw my lines and sand to the lines.  What would you recommend to build the form back up with?  The worst depth is approximately 1/8".

I have also considered scrapping it and starting over but if I can save it I would like to try.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

id think some thin wood veneer glued down then re-cut would give you a solid option.

Can't you just lower the template past the bad area and re cut it. then flip the template over and re cut the other side.  I dont think I would use a filler as I am not sure what the heat would do to it.

Yeah... what mile hi said.  That is what I would do.  Lower the template 1/4" and just redo.  Use a grinder on the dimples to get them flush first.
God gave you hands, use them

Thank you.  I will give it a try.  I think I will build a new template out of plywood before attempting a redo.  I will let you know if I'm successful.

You could use "Bondo" body filler. The heat needed to cure your epoxy glue (165-180) shouldn't be a problem for cured Bondo.
JB Weld would also work, but the cost would be fairly high for the JB itself.

lots of us have used Bondo on small "digs" in the form. not sure how deep or big your problem areas are..I have used bondo on 1/8" deep and 3/8"  wide places on form, I also use .040 glass on top of form.
