Lignum Vitae as a riser wood?
« on: December 23, 2010, 08:26:00 AM »
Lignim Vitae is the densest wood in the world. They used to use it for marine bearings on ships. I've got a couple of pieces that I've had here but never got around to having anything made with them. ( I'm no bowyer).  I like good mass weight, I'm an ex- olympic style shooter so I appreciate the stability of a heavy riser.  I figure a wave of this stuff in the riser may be worth a try.
Anybody ever use it?

David..........

I have read some posts about that wood being used for risers. I have some that really looks good but have never used it  YET.

I used it in a riser for a bamboo backed hickory recurve I built for my brother.  I like it, it will add some weight but the piece I had was pretty straight grained so I don't know how a piece with figure would act.  No problem using Urac with it either.  it will not add a lot of weight as a strip, you would be better off it you want weight by using Lignum around a strip of some other wood.
