Need help on restoring please
« on: December 29, 2010, 03:10:00 PM »
I recently was given a old recurve(50's-60's) that hadn't been shot in lord knows how long and was stored in a climate controlled room in a barn at a house that my brother bought. The man that had the house asked me if i wanted it and everything that went with it and i said yes sir. Anyways it shoots great and everything but the clear coat coud be touched up and it looks bland but my question is, is since it is a no name brand its made by someone in Conneticut would it hurt if i sanded it down and re-did it and added limb tips to it? Any help is appreciated

There is no reason I can think of not to re-finish it. Go slowly with fine sand paper. Maybe start with 220 grit. You;ll mostly be removing the old finish.

I'm sure if you check through the archives you'll find some other threads.
Good luck.

thank you I really thought about staining it kind of a rich brown and then adding tip overlays to it

I will just say this, you cant hurt it! Whatever you stain or seal can always be removed if need be. If its not a collector or valuable to you, go for it. Sand the ENTIRE bow down clean and smooth, glass and all. Hang it from some fishing line and spray it with Minwax spray poly satin. Give it a coat every two hours. I would go no less than 3 coats, dont sand between coats. You will like your outcome.
