UC16, if the tree has smooth, dark gray bark, and large clusters of thorns, and I mean long, mean, looking thorns, on the trunk, you have Honey locust! Also, look for seed pods, shaped like bananas, around the base of the tree.
Black locust, no thorns on the trunk! I have both types on my property and in my area. Have also cut alot of it, since a kid!
Yes, it has been used for bows. Howard Hill Archery, uses it for lams. and sure others do to.
