Bowyer Question
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:02:00 PM »
After seeing all the bow makers on here I thought it might be fun to try and make a selfbow. Basically I know nothing of the craft and am looking for some help and guidance on what direction to go in and what tools and materials I will need. After researching selfbows I figured that it would probably be the easiest (for lack of a better term) bow to make just starting out. So, where should I start.

Welcome to TradGang and to our addiction, GreyGhost.  The first thing you should do is read George Tsoukalas website. George will tell you what you need to get started, what board to buy, how to build the bow and how to finish it(and lots more!).
Come back on here and read everything that interests you and ask as many questions as you need to.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

Welcome to the TradGang. The link provided by AKmud and Pat B's advice are both first class. And by all means ask questions, and read all you can digest here. Lots of very talented Bowyers here, and very accomadating to us Greenhorns.
Step lightly, and shoot a trad bow.

Hmmm      . Actually I'm not sure. I found this thread on here and really like the way this guy made his bow.  http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=125;t=005170#000000  . I know I probably wont make a bow half this nice on my first try but I really like this bow. Is this a stave or board bow?

Follow along with the link below. I'm going slow, using only simple hand tools & answering all questions. All you should need is a drawknife, rasp, scraper & maybe a hand saw.
