Finally finished this project.
« on: February 06, 2011, 04:50:00 PM »
A cool little osage bow I posted a while back that I finished last night. It's 48@28 and 58in. ntn. Whitetail antler tips again. Finished with some dyes like I saw on John Scrifes bow. I thought it was cool and figured I'd try it. It didn't come out to bad. here are some pics.

That is an awsome looking bow.  Love the hole.

Let me be very clear about one thing though, as I cannot claim any credit for the faded dye job.  That was taught to me by Dean Torges and is described fully in his book "Hunting the Osage Bow".  He uses powdered aniline dyes in alcohol and they work fantastic.  But they are a bit labor intensive and will cause problems if you accidentally track some spilled green dye from your shop onto your beige colored carpet throughout the house  :)

I use leather dyes that I got at a garage sale.  I don't really know what they are but they work great.  It's easier to see when i spill them too.  RIT dye in denatured alcohol works but will fade a bit over time.
Take a kid hunting!

Thanks everyone!

John- I have read Dean's book. It was the first one I bought. I remember the chapter and re-read the book from time to time. It IS full of great info for the bowyer. I'd like to find his Boo backed info too. I built my steam tube from his idea and still use it to speed dry wood following his steps.

The stain I used was Master Arrowsmith Stains.

That's nice Dave, real nice.

Where exactly is the hole located on the bow? I couldn't tell from the pics.

You are a bow building machine! Man, I feel lazy after seeing how you just keep knocking them out of the park!   :notworthy:

Chris,
The know is about ten inches from the tip of the top limb.  I know how the lazy feels. I have spells where weeks will pass and I don't have the bow building bug, then a post or an idea catches my eye and bam I"m back at it like a madman building two or three at a time then bck to sittin. That and I've always got a few "forever" projects hangin around.

right now i have two staves , one in the "dry but drying some more till i get to it" , one that is "just drying" , one that is "roughed out" , one that is in need of some backing , and another that is in need of a finish.

hmmm...i might have something to do tomorrow...

I've got on project on hold or in "limbo" however you want to look at it.
One bow just finished about 2 weeks ago.
One bow underway that's already sold.
Another project that needs started.
And about 3 or 4 ideas running around in my head that I need to get out.

It's a cycle of addiction just like a drug. Somedays I gotta have my fix, and other days I don't feel like I need it or want it.
