Holly Molly, I cut my bow in half.!
« on: February 07, 2011, 07:05:00 PM »
But I meant to. I am in the process of installing an Bow Bolt. Yesterday, I built the jig and filled it with expandable foam and allowed it to cure overnight. This morning I cut it into with my compound miter saw. What a nerve racking experience. It did turn out well and I even drilled the holes to accept the bow bolt.

I think this was the most nerve racking thing I have ever done since I began building bows.

I felt the same way when I cut mine for the bow bolt, and mine was a production bow. I can't imagine what it was like after spending all that time on such a beautiful build.

I checked my setup about 10 times before I made my cut. Drilling the holes was even more time consuming at I checked and re-checked a dozen times. I am quite pleased with the results so far. Tomorrow I plan to glue in the bow bolt. Do you have any suggestions on that step?

Double check and make sure:

The Bow Bolt is tightened all the way before installing it.

Do a pre-assembly with all clamps and alignment material/jigs.

Check & recheck the tip alignment, both pre & post glue-up.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Yeah, I don't think I could bring myself to do it either?
I'd rather just get a longer hard case to carry it in if I decided to fly somewhere to hunt, or find a safe place to tuck it away while on a road trip. Hope it works well for you Ricky, good luck.

Yeah I would use it then build the bow after it was installed.  Would dread cutting it up.

Best of luck.  Like stated earlier make absolutely sure that the bow bolt is in the locked position.  Hope it holds for you.  Not real sure as to what gave first.  The bolt is just as tight as it can get.

Man, you are killing me with that picture. Did you contact Warren's Archery about it?

Nothing to do with Warrens Archery.  The mechanical part of the bolt didn't fail.  The bolt is still "screwed" or "twist locked" together.  The top of the bolt pulled out or the phenolic gave way or either the wood gave away.  No one knows.  The bow bolt is a good concept but it has failed many times.  You do what you want but I'm just trying to save you the headache of possible failure.

I have another 2 piecer and its got the brass sleeve from three rivers and I trust that system or Big Jims system.

I hope your not coming to full draw in a coulee on a big 5 point and it gives way.  I know I'll never have another bow bolt.  Sorry for the negative post but that would be my luck.

The owner of Warren Archery told me that some woods do not work well with the bolt. My bolt will be completely in Actionwood.

Then it should hold very well.  Best of luck to you.

Double check alignment before drilling.

One reason (there may be more)the bow in the pic broke is because the glue did not adhere to the bowbolt. There was sufficient glue applied the  bolt but it did not adhere to the bolt for some reason.

A friend and I glued up two bows with the same batch of epoxy (MT 13 ?) His gave way just like the bow in the picture. Mine held. spoke to Craig about it and the first thing he asked was did the bolt have a good coating of glue on it when removed from the bow.

I have since gone to the fiberglas sleeve

Good luck with your project.
