Educate me on lam thickness
« on: February 10, 2011, 07:20:00 PM »
I have only built bows for myself with my 28" draw so I need advice on making one for a friend that has a 30" draw length.
Clear glass front & back .050" thickness.
 .060 Actionboo parallel core.
.060 Actionboo tapers .002 per in.
Thin veneers under glass, walnut, cherry, or osage, I have all three.
Going for a 45-50# max draw weight.
Overall length, riser length, thickness, and any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks guys;

I'm assuming this is will be a longbow.
What sort of design will this be - R/D, Reflexed, Straight, String follow?
You should also decide what length the bow will be first and then adjust your lam thickness to the design.  Lots of variables to think about.

Sorry; had to leave about the time I was typing the above post. I am thinking about a 64" longbow with minor R/D, not over 2" most likely. I like 62" but was afraid that I would need more for the 30" draw. Am I wrong on that? Can doing a shorter riser; say 14-16" let me get by with a 62" ntn longbow.

Hey Tony,

Here is my 64" medium d/r

45# @ 28" (close to 50@30")
18" riser with thin fades(.145" at 2" from end)
1.5" wide at fades
1/2" wide at nock
.003" per inch total taper
.355" lam stack at butt including 2 - .040 glass

If you look here, you can see a 64" at 28 and 31" draws and the string angle. Soon after they hit square with the string, stacking is gonna start.

Thanks forumla Kenny. I am doing two bows (Thus the order for 4 peices of glass) so if his don't come out close enough I can keep it for myself and have a second try working from the first one.

If your friend has a true 30 draw with a stick bow I'd make it more like 66 inches to make it feel easier drawing.
