Leather to wood?
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:45:00 PM »
Working on another kids bow. This one for a 7 yr old girl. Got some cool backing. Pink and black, kinda tribal striped. Didn't have it long enough to cover whole bow, and didn't want to splice. So in handle area was going to put a piece of leather (4 to 5 oz) on the back then put some sort of design on the leather. Would contact cement be ok to glue the leather onto the red oak. Or would TBIII or just plain 5 min 2-part epoxy work. Thanks.

I have used contact cement successfully in the past.  I think if you use Titebond or the epoxy it would work as well but it is more likely to be stiffer with them.

I fill out the back of my handles with leather and use TB glue for it. I like to wet the leather first so it will soak up the glue. Also I use rubber bands to "clamp" the leather to the stave.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. Glued it up with contact cement about midnight. Getting ready to go see how it turned out.

I use contact cement on all my leather strike plates and rests. It doesnt let go until I yank it off.

I use contact cement too for strike plates and floppy rests but for these handle backs I like to wet the leather so I can mold it to the back of the stave. I guess I could let it dry first but the TB works just fine and I can glue up the leather wet.

Turned out pretty good. Wish I had read Pats post prior to glue up. Will have to get some large rubber bands. That looks like it woud do pretty good. Will post the bow when I get time. Thanks again.

I glued a thinish rawhide goat skin backing to a bow with Gorrilla glue under high pressure.  Wet the wood and soaked the rawhide first.  Came out dang near as clear as clear glass.

Now that I re-read my post it does not actully adress your question at all.  Sorry!

I have not used it as of yet myself, but I have read that many Bowyers use "Barge" cement when applying leather to their bow handles.  Good luck

Hova, I can't come up with any pics and the bow seems to have dissapeared over the years.  Was made for one of the grand kids about 12 years ago.
