Cover up screw holes - skins?
« on: March 06, 2011, 06:46:00 PM »
I  have an old takedown recurve that I have striped down and begun refinishing.  I just finished gluing up a set of skins on the limbs and now I'm looking at the riser.  There were holes where a sight had been mounted.  I filled those and stained the riser since it was a natural maple.  The fill for the holes is fairly easy to see.  I was wondering what suggestions you might have for covering them.  I thought about trimming a piece of the left over edges of the skins I put on the limbs and gluing one of  those to the face of the riser - maybe 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch wide, but not sure how that would look.  I used rattle snake skins and the diamonds are all on the limbs; thus the edge pieces would not have a lot of character.  I don't have any glass laying around or I would consider a small strip of glass lamination.

Any ideas?

Are the holes on the front or side of the riser? Either way a very thin veneer of exotic or gnarly grained wood blended in and then sealed as a whole would look nice.

The holes are on the front of the riser.  The veneer idea might work.  I'm not a fan of inserts.  I don't use a bow quiver and this bow will never leave the family as it was made by my father.

In woodworking, there's a special drill that cuts out plugs that are used to cover up screw holes. You tap in the plug (with glue), and then cut it with a flush cut saw. Sand it smooth, and if you match the grain, it will look mostly seamless. I don't know too much about where to get one, but maybe someone else here can help you out.

What type of wood is the riser, or tip overlays? I have alot of domestic scraps laying around you can have.

Jess, Pearl

The riser is maple.  The tips, like the rest of the limbs are a dark forest green glass.  I would need a piece 6 inches long and 3/4 inch wide.
