Holy Osage Batman!!
« on: March 08, 2011, 01:56:00 PM »
Went out last weekend to try to get a little osage and I hit the mother load.  I cut one of the biggest osage trees that I have ever seen. And straight let me tell ya.  The growth rings on one side of this trunk were close to 1/2 inch thick.
I ended up with 3 logs 6 feet long and about 16" inches in diameter. When I got to the top of the trunk the rings are still close to 1/4 inch apart.

I dont even know how you would build a bow with rings like that.  I need to cut something besides saplings.  Mine look like the center of your  tree.  Way to go and have fun with those!!

Im still trying to decide the best way about going at this.  With rings so thick Im not sure how to make the most of the wood. The grain is super straight. I dont want to waste any of it. If anyone has any ideas I would be glad to listen.  The log with the quarter on it is still about 10 inches wide and 8 inches tall. Most of what I have worked with in the past has been alot smaller in diameter and I never had the option of getting more than one stave out of the same piece if that makes sense. I typically split the logs with the outside width to be about 3" and you have a nice little pie shaped piece if you will. As of right now I have split each log into quarters... So now what?

I really envy you guys!

Anyways, could you make your first split double wide, remove a belly split, and then re-split the upper portion.

Those big rings aren't exactly a plus sometimes. I would make sister billets myself. More options.......Art

Just remember with that big of log you should get some nice belly splits. So split your staves fairly wide then take some belly splits off of it. Once you do that then you can split the top stave again. Dean

Belly Split?  Would that be the inner portion of the quarter?

Like troutguide said, all of my staves I have in the attice look like the inside of your tree.
