String not centered on a glass bow. Which side to sand????
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:41:00 PM »
I am just finishing up a glass lam bow. When it is strung and I look at it from the belly side. I always try to see if the string looks like it is running straight down the center of each limb.
I also hold the bow up and sight down the limb from the back of the bow to see if the limb appears to be running true and not pulling to one side or the other.
On this bow, the top limb looks perfect but the bottom limb has a slight pull to one side.
My question is....When i sight down the belly side on this bow, I center the string visually on the top limb because it looks the straightest.
So when I do that, the string is slightly off to the left side on the bottom limb.
Does the string pull to the weak side or the strong side??
If the string is off to the left like I describe, would i sand the left side(the side the string is closest to) to bring it back to center.
Or, do I sand the right side( the side the string is furthest from)?
Does the string naturally pull to the strong or the weak side?

Be sure your nocks are even in both depth and height, if not they can lead you astray.  The limb will point or twist towards weakness assuming the nocks are okay.

Looking down the belly of the bow sand the side that is widest. When you get it straight you will have to sand equal amounts off of the sides of the top limb in order to retiller. When doing any of this I have made it a habit to white masking tape the limb and mark the center line with an ultra fine sharpie . Tape both limbs because when you re tiller the top limb you will want to keep it centered. god bless you and good luck. Steve

I am not sure either of the above descriptions is clear enough. I ran up against this problem when I made my first glass bow and had to call Charlie Lamb. I had convinced myself both ways before giving up and calling someone who knew.

The stronger side will bend LESS (makes sense if you don't over think it). Looking at the bow from the belly - the string will track towards the stronger side.

Real glass bowyers please jump in here if I am misremembering and stearing warden415 astray.

You've got it right, Shaun.  Don't over think it!  Works for glass and wood bows just alike.

Think about what jess said before you do anything.  Consider that if a string nock is not deep enough on one side it will allow the string to pull harder on the outside edge of that limb.  That will make the other side seem more resistant (stronger).  Even if your nocks seem to be identical depth on each side, this can still happen if the limb is not dead center.

OTOH, don't do anything until more comments are posted on this!!!!!!!!

I posted it very clear . If you look down the belly the side that is the widest from the string gets sanded. That is simple. Do not as the man said overthink it. just sand the widest side. Sand at mid limb. not at the tips. From mid limb foreward. Am I sure? done a few. I do build glass bows. Am I a real glass bowyer? Hmmm , I use wood , carbon , foam and glass. Not too sure if I'm real,. Guess I gotta pinch my self. Yep I'm a real glass bowyer.

God Bless you , Steve

Here is my take on it...This has helped me in the past.

And generally, step 1 will fix the issue and step 2 is not necessary.

Thanks for the helpful info  Heres some pics of what I'm getting on my longbow, Hopefully you can see...The Pictures make it look a little more drastic than it actually is.  A question about sanding, Do I want to sand the belly the back or the actual SIDE of the bow.  And I'm getting that I want to work on the complete LEFT side of the bow.. Correct?
