Another splinter.....

:banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:
Daaaang.....everything was goin' good.  Tiller was gettin' close.  It seems that I usually don't get the bow to start bending close enough to the handle so thought I'd try gettin' this one to bend sooner.

Did a little more sanding on the belly near the handle and put the bow back on the tree.  Stepped back to start pullin' and noticed something on top of the limb.  Reached up to wipe it off and felt it.  A splinter, little over 1/8" wide and a little over 1" long.

Well I took the bow down and got some thin super glue.  Then I pulled the string enough to be able to force the end of a toothpick under the tip of the splinter.  Then I forced some glue into the gap and pulled the toothpick out, unstrung the bow, and put a clamp on the spot.  Hope this takes care of it.

Don't know why this happened.  It is right about in the middle of the limb, on the back side.  Hope this holds, or it was a bunch of practice for nothin'.  If I knew why it happened I would have learned from it.  Not knowing why, all I've learned is that sometimes it just sucks.....

I guess I should've taken a pic or two but I just hurried up and got it glued.  I'll take a pic tomorrow and see how it does.  Besides the glue anything else I could do for it?  :dunno:

I'd wrap it with artificial sinew or nylon thread. Set in epoxy. Rawhide will work.  Put it on with hide glue. Jawge

Joe I have fixed a couple with flax comb and so far they have held. I did the same thing and put super glue in the crack, then put some flex in the limb to close up the crack. Let dry thoroughly and wrapped with flax comb. It works really well, but I used TBII for gluing the flax down with and I'm not so sure it's the best glue to use? It wants to crack when you flex it and it doesn't hurt anything physically, but doesn't look too pretty. I'm sure a different glue would work better, something that will flex with the bow? I dunno what that would be.

Like Shakes said, do both limbs in the same spot and it will look like you did it on purpose.

Well took care of the splinter.  Seems like the super glue did the trick.  Shot the bow 50 or more times and all was well.  She was shootin' real hard.  I was gettin about 55# @ about 23".  Arrows were flyin' good and flat, I was impressed.

This bow was lookin' good and I already bought some skins for it.  I wanted this one to look good so I thought I'd try and put some reflex into the limbs with the help of a heat gun.  Apparantly I don't know how to do that.  When I tried to pull the limb tips down with the clamp she cracked all the way across the belly.  :banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:

Another one bites the dust.  That makes 2 shooters, and 3 sticks.  This one was shootin' hard, and lookin' good. Even the wife had commented on how she liked the shape of this one. I guess I have learned from it, not real sure just what though.

Guess I'll have to look around on here and find some info on puttin' reflex into the limbs.  Like at what point of the tillerin' should ya do it?  I tried it near the end of tillerin'.  She had reflex at the beginning but lost it with my tillerin'.  Should I leave the last foot of the limbs go till the end since that's where the reflex was to start with?  I don't know, but I guess I'll have to start on another one and figure it out.

Thanks for the advice, and listening to me moan... later..   :coffee:

Pat B once told me "a seasoned bowyer knows when to stop", or something close to that.......thats after I had a bow "finished" and wanted to do the same thing you just did.
