What do you do with holes?
« on: March 30, 2011, 08:02:00 PM »
Looking at buying a used recurve, and this'll be my first traditional. Have seen a couple that I've liked, but they've had holes drilled for what I'm guessing would be to connect a quiver. How do you deal with the holes? Fill them?

Either/or. Its all about what you want to look at.

What would you fill them with? I know absolutely nothing about doing this type thing. Obtaining material to learn how to work on traditional bows, but I don't have the knowhow to make it look "professional". If it helps, the holes are on the upper of the riser.

Put a quiver bracket on it. I installed threaded bushings on my Bear Grizzly so I could use a removable quiver. That's just how I like to roll.

Or if you absolutely don't want that, you can fill the holes with wood epoxy that may or may not match the color of your bow. Then you would have to try to camoflage the off color plugs in the bow with paint or something else.

Somebody else may have a better fix, I'm sure one of our Master Bow Makers will step in here and enlighten all of us.

I'm not much into recurves, but could you use one of those antler burr limb bolts?  Maybe just screw it in for decoration.  Maybe its a dumb idea, I don't know.

Might be a dumb idea but you could drill them out and put some coins in them or something.  Maybe a compass or archery hat pins.  Put something in there that mean something to ya.

I've actually been thinking about putting a kwikee back on it since that's what it looks like the holes are from from the spacing, and I was also looking at putting something else in them like a couple have mentioned. Was thinking maybe even some kind of cool decorative plate along the outer riser would be pretty neat. It'd be a lot easier to just put a kwikee back on though. I've had them on my compounds since I was 13 years old. Tried going to several high end quivers over the year, but always ended up selling them to go back to a kwikee!

I intalled the quiver bushings on my old Bear Grizzly on purpose. My uncle already had some holes drilled in it from a failed sight bracket attempt Lord only knows how long ago? So I didn't figure a couple more holes in the riser area would hurt the value anyway.
I'm not real keen on strap on quivers and I don't like carrying anything on my back or my hip. I have honestly never found anything that was quite enough or didn't hinder me while moving around through the woods.

I do like my quiver attached to my bow and I like it easily removable for when I'm in a tree stand, so the answer was obvious for me. I bought the bushings from Rockler and they were stainless steel.....not brass. Don't use brass!

Here's a pic of my Grizzly wearing the quiver.

Looking like I may just put a quiver back on it.
