Little Shaver Bow, Second Try!!

Well, the since the 1st Attempt kind of Failed, "Try Try Again!!" I used a piece of WheelBarrow Handle, assuming (I know, I know  :rolleyes:  ) it was Hickory.
  I havent worked with Hickory before, although I have some (Thanks Mark!!) but its too big to make a Little Bow out of. I do believe what I have is Oak, judging by the Hardness and Grain Pattern. I am going to try the Pic Posts again and let the Bowyer Public Decide!! I got it roughed out ok, started to tiller, and one limb made a gut-wrenching "Craaack". I am HOPING that with some more Scraping and posibly some backing material, it will survive to be a Functional Shooter.  :thumbsup:   hahaha More to come!! I Hope!!

Looks like oak to me.
The grain is running off at a pretty steep angle too. It may still work for a kid's bow though. Just make sure never to pull it past target weight while you're tillering. You do have a scale right?

Yeppers, I have a scale.  :D   I have been scraping, nice and slow, being careful, I havent even flexed the limbs too far yet, but I  HAVE  taken them down in Thickness a bit. I think that was the Problem.
  I am leaving the last 3" of the limbs alone. Just cut the String Grooves in her Saturday. Didnt touch it yesterday either. Hopefully get back into it tomorrow and see what I can do. I Suspected Oak, and after I  SAW  some Hickory in another Post, I pretty much knew it was such.

Sorry about the last bow, but cute pics of your "Little Robin Hoodlet" tell her she's gonna be "Shera Queen of the Forest" someday when she gets big and can shoot like Pa Pa does.

Looks like oak to me too in the other pics, maybe white oak or black oak? Hard to tell from just a pic cause until you hit it with some stain or finish the color doesn't really jump out at ya.

Have you thought about a sapling bow? There wouldn't be much tillering involved, just pic out a nice one that's just her size. Then dress it up like a little Indian bow and make it kinda perty.
Then you can take your time with making a bow she can grow into later on.
A hickory sapling about 1" diameter would probably work. I know it's real hard to tiller a big piece of wood down to such a low bow weight. They can only get so skinny before they snap.

A Sapling Bow is a Good idea, hadnt thought about that. Thanks for the Info Semo!! I do remember now seeing a Post about such a Thing. I considered a 3/8 Dowel at 36", just to make something Quick and Dirty. I have one, but I hate to use it, especially after she latched onto the First Attempt!! "Fix It PaPaw! You Can Do It!!"  :thumbsup:   hahaha Bless Her Little Heart!!!  :pray:   I do believe it is White Oak, because it isnt Red, or Black. Black Oak would have much darker Grain wouldnt it?
     CJ, I saw the Steep Grain Runs, and just Crossed My Fingers since it will only be Pulling around 3 Pounds. All I can do is be Really Careful, and Take My Time. If it Blows, then it Blows. Then back to "Try, Try Again!" until I get it Right!! I think the Wee Robin Hoodlet deserves the Best I can do.
     Besides, once I get the Little Bows Down, I just may have enough Self-Courage to Start a Big Bow for Me!! hahaha I have a Nice Hickory Stave that was Gifted to Me, plus a You-Finish-It Bow from Wingnut. Boo Backed Something.....It Escapes my Pea Brain at the moment. I have slept a Time or 2 since I bought it. hahaha    :biglaugh:

red oak is actually more golden than white oak. white also has lots more flecks if you get quartersawn. google it and hit images and youll see. if you cant find rift sawn cheap enough , this is the prime of the prime.
