Trade bow build along
« on: April 25, 2011, 12:27:00 AM »
Ok, this is it!  No more messing around!

My trade bow will be a hickory backed red oak somewhere around 70-72" with either Bubinga or Zebra wood handle and overlays.  I just got everything laid out tonight so this build along will take a while.

It's only a board, but check out the growth rings.  The board is 3" wide at this point.  - (even I shouldn't be able to mess this one up!)

The hickory backing is pretty thin but has some nice color.  It curled a bit after a few passes through my planer.

What accent wood should I go with - Bubinga or Zebra?  I'll also be adding some black phenolic accents.

AKmud, I'd go with the zebra wood. Kinda stays with the main color scheme but adds a little darker contrast.
...Oh, you're not pickin' out colors for the kitchen, are you?  :D

That's a really nice piece of red oak. Can't wait to see this one finished.

I've actually had decent luck with red oak, but I don't particularly like it....

Here is an unbacked red oak I did for my daughter -

Hopefully this trade bow will be a keeper.  :)

Ok....back from a whirlwind trip to Washington DC with my daughter.  She won the Prudential Spirit of Community award for Alaska and was given an all expenses paid 5 day trip to DC with a parent. (proud dad moment here!)

Hopefully I will get this bow glued up tonight.

That board you got there looks real good and dense for red oak.

You should be able to get two bows out of it if you rip it in half.

I love using red oak...its cheap and can make a very good performing bow if you tiller it well and keep the tips narrow and deep.

I've only broken a few red oak bows and the last was a 48" shorty I had cable backed and broke around 25" and 40lbs.  Limb just folded from the stress lol.
