Wood grain orientation layout for risers??????

I wanted to know what the proper or preffered grain layout for a riser would be? I am trying to get the MOST grain variation to show. My question is I guess, most pieces of wood have a flat grain and an edge grain to them. Should the edge grain sides be facing back and belly of bow or should the flat grain sides be facing back and belly?
Initially I was thinking flat grain should be back and belly then I flip the wood and think the other way will be right?
On a flat limb it is obvious, but on a rounded over riser I wanted to see what the preffered way was to get the most character out of a piece of wood? Thanks Steve

Steve, the grain should run from top to bottom of riser.  End grain should be at the top and bottom ends of the riser. If you want max figure, I believe the blank should be quarter sawn.  If looking from top of the riser (or bottom), you'll see the rings go diagonal through the blank.
