Kid's Bow - Hickory / Teak
« on: May 16, 2011, 03:20:00 PM »
Well, here are a few pics of a kid's bow I made for my youngest (8 yr) son, Grayson.  It is a Hickory / Teak composite that I shaped off the "Traveling Caul" pattern I received from Semo & the Gang.

The bow is 40" ntn, 15# @ 20".  Unfortunately the Teak didn't make for a good bow belly wood or at least in this combo as it fretted on the belly while shooting it in.  I think it will hold and more importantly he loves it.

This is the shape off the Caul an not set in the bow

Here are the frets on the belly...

Thanks for looking and for all the help over the past couple months...many more to come!

That really did fret, didn't it? Tiller looks pretty good though! Nice stain!

Big time...lesson learned, I had heard that Teak was a poor choice but this was free and me being a cheap "you know what" I figured it might be ok for a kid's bow.  So Teak is right up there with Balsa as choice bow woods in my mind    :biglaugh:

I need to finish my Trade Bow for the PA trade and then finish his older brother's bow and then I'll make him a solid replacement.  He love's it but I told him it's days were numbered.

Nice job Lee! I love the black stain, what did you use to get it so black? I wanna do a black bow myself, don't know why just want one.

At least your making bows and that's what counts cause the more you make the better you get!
Keep on keepin on man, knock em out!

Thanks Chris, I used Tandy's Black leather dye (the good stuff, not that new "eco-friendly" crud)

The bow could look much better as it only has 1 coat of Tru-oil and then I rubbed it down with "Sno-Seal" for a wax type finish.  Figured with the back as fretted as it was it didn't warrant 10 coats of Tru-oil.
