extending site window?
« on: May 25, 2011, 11:24:00 PM »
I have a few bows that have rather small site windowa. This causes me some problems because I shoot splt finger with pointer finger as anchor and have a somewhat long face. This puts the riser in my field of view because. Don' t cant very much. I was wondering how big o a deal it would be to rasp or grind more of the riser away to extend the site window. Might be tricky with the fiberglass and all.

it's not that it's tricky or hard to do. the question is, do you have enough material on your riser to do that? if not, you may weaken the bow to the point that it will break when you draw it. pictures of the bow at different angles around the riser would help determine if it's possible for you. don

I'VE DONE IT & THINK IT CAN BE DONE, TO LENGTHEN THE SIGHT WINDOW SOME, PROVIDED YOUR CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CHOICE OF REINFORCING MATERIALS ON THE BACK AND BELLY ARE SUFFICIENT TO THE TASK. IT HAS THE RISK OF A FRACTURE HOWEVER, BUT THAT'S TRUE OF ANY BOW.
PROVEN DESIGNS BY REPUTABLE BOWYERS ARE BEST NOT TO MONKEY WITH. IF I WERE YOU I'D START GETTING COMFORTABLE WITH CANTING THE BOW WHILE SHOOTING.
IF THE BOW IS BLOCKING YOUR VISION PERHAPS YOU ARE SHOOTING OFF YOUR WEAK EYE, CHECK THAT ONE FIRST.
Teaching kids to shoot is archery's greatest hoot!

Thanks for the input. Probably won't start canting now, and it's not an eye dominance issue. I was thinking that as long as you aren' t going above the fades, the riser is already at it's weakest at it's thinnest point just above the shelf. If I don' t go above that it should be stronger there. But maybe not if it isn't as thick.
