It's DONE. "Big Red One"
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:58:00 PM »
WooHoo!  My first board-bow is done.  Red Oak with canarywood grip.  68"ntn, 40#@27" (give or take a few lbs.)  Finished with Minwax Pecan stain/finish so it deepened the red of the oak, hence the name.

It was a blast building this.  I took my time but all in all it only took about 4-5 hours total.  Still have to make a string, serve it, and start shooting for real.  I have shot it using a shortened long-string (about a dz arrows) and it has no hand-shock what-so-ever.  I'm happy.

Here it's braced just a touch too high with a shortened long-string.

When I cut the grip, I wasn't sure where to start.  Ended up way too low for me.  The balance just wasn't right.  So I started cutting a new grip slightly higher.  At first I was sure I had ruined the thing but it actually worked out great.

I want to especially thank (blame?   :) ) Sam at Poor Folks Bow.  If he hadn't posted a picture at the LumberJocks web, I'd have never started this adventure.  I also want to thank all the folks here that have helped me along the way with this first build.

Next week I go shopping for some hickory for bow for my son and grandson...

Great job, wildbill. I think Sam gets blamed for heading quite a few folks in this direction.

Wildbill, excellent tiller on a very nice build...careful as this bowyer-ism is quite the disease...
