tillering help (pics)
« on: July 03, 2011, 01:29:00 PM »
Tillering my board bow and need a ltiile help. This is my 1st bow and I still have a ton to learn.
On the tillering tree:

With the bow string on it:

It looks to me like there might be a hinge on the right limb about mid-limb? and the left limb seems a little stiff? I thought the tiller looked good until I put the bow string on it. there is a little place in the right limb where I cut a little close with the band saw. Its right past the handle.

What do you guys think?

Right limb looks heavy from mid limb out to the tip. I'd work on that first and see where that puts the left limb at, and don't use the long string anymore. Do all your tillering and eyeballing the tiller with it on the short string, also get the draw length a bit longer and inch or two at a time. It looks like it's ready to pull more at this point or you'll be in danger of coming in under weight. Work the limbs at least 30 pulls each time in between tillering sessions to condition the limbs to pulling further. Take it easy and don't yank it all the way down to full draw all at once, do it gradually by exercising the limbs down gradually.

Hope that helps. Some other folks will be along eventually to give their advice I'm sure.

It has recurve tips on it so I didn't think the tips will bend much.

That's looking very good.  In addition to what Semo said, I'd run a tillering gizmo along both limbs to see what it tells you. Obviously, it won't help on the stiff tips (other than to tell you where they begin to straighten out, which you can match limb to limb) or near the fades.  Take your time and you'll have a shooter   :)
